The Program: The Midwest Division of the
American Theological Society is a regional organization
of scholars who teach and publish in the fields of religious
studies. The Society’s semi-annual meetings often
reach beyond its local membership to invite scholars from
across the country and around the world to present papers,
participate in lively discussions, and share in a collegial
refreshments. For the one hundred fifty-seventh meeting
of the Society, the Executive Committee is pleased to
focus the Society’s attention on “creativity.”
Theological Table-Talk will open
with a panel of our peers who will address such questions
as: What does it take to teach theology creatively? How
has new technology changed perceptions of creativity for
students and teachers? How does one teach ‘the old
stuff’ year after year after year? Reflections will
include examples of creative teaching as well as experiences
of teaching theology on-line. In the afternoon session
the Society is delighted to welcome Gordon Kaufman, Harvard’s
Malinckrodt Professor of Divinity Emeritus, to our community
to talk on “A Religious View of Creativity: Creativity
as God.” In the tradition of the Society,
his remarks will be by two formal responses (by Jerome
A. Stone and Amanda Quantz) before opening up the discussion
the entire Society. Enjoy the moment.
The evening session of the spring
meeting is always reserved for the renown Presidential
Address which will be deliver this year give by President
Antje Jackelén on “Creativity and Emergence:
What Emergence Can Do for Theology.” After the paper,
the floor is open for extensive conversation.
If you are unable to attend the
full meeting, you should feel free to participate in whichever
portion of the program fits your schedule. The Executive
Committee designs each program for both collegial renewal
and vigorous conversation. Why not break free of your
routine and engage your friends with good food and drink
for mind, body, and soul? For further information, contact
any of the Society’s officers or Paul Parker at
the addresses below.
Housing, Registration,
